The Lord of the Rings

Saruman, appearing first in J.R.R. Tolkien's *The Fellowship of the Ring*, is a pivotal figure in the history of Middle Earth. Originally the chief of the Istari, wizards sent to assist the free peoples against Sauron, he was known as Saruman the White, head of the White Council, and lived in Isengard.

Over time, Saruman became increasingly fascinated with Sauron's power and methods. He began to study the Dark Lord's techniques, hoping to surpass him and create a new order in Middle Earth. This ambition led him to betray the White Council and ultimately ally himself, albeit briefly, with Sauron.

His fall from grace is marked by his adoption of white robes of office that, while initially a sign of his authority, became a symbol of his corruption. He ultimately met his end, not in grand battle, but as a diminished figure, highlighting the dangers of pride and the corrupting influence of power.
